For Children ages 4 thru 10 years old Weekly During the Sunday, 11:00am Mass
What is Liturgy of the Word with Children?
At Mass, when the Liturgy of the Word with Children is offered, the children are dismissed ritually after the Opening Prayer and led out of the church by the cross bearer to hear the Word of God in their own space. The children later return with their adult facilitators and the cross bearer during the Procession of the Gifts. The Liturgy of the Word with Children includes all of the elements that are experienced in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass.
First Reading
Responsorial Psalm
Gospel Acclamation
Gospel & Reflection
Creed
General Intercessions
At times there may be a Gospel drama where appropriate, and usually the Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation are sung. If time, there might be a song that ties in the Gospel Reading. The presider for the LIturgy of the Word with Children leads a scripture reflection with the children - usually beginning with "What do you hear?" There are no arts and crafts during Liturgy of the Word with Children. The focus is on:
The Proclamation of God's Word, in language that young children can easily understand
giving the children an opportunity to reflect on God's Word and explore how it connects to their lives.
prayer
song (including movement or gesture where appropriate)
and ritual action (e.g. dismissal procession, lighting of the candle, Gospel procession)
Readings are proclaimed from the Children's Lectionary, which for the most part is a simpler version of the readings of the day for the adult assembly.
